Automobile Insurance Coverage Descriptions
Bodily Injury Liability Pays when you are legally liable for injury or death
(Sometimes referred to as BI) caused by your vehicle. Legal fees, bail bonds & court costs are also included. Pays up to the first limit for each person & up to the second limit, maximum, for all persons injured or killed in any accident when you are legally liable. Some policies are “combined single limit” or CSL which means Bodily Injury and Property Damage are all in one single limit, $ 100,000 Single Limit means the maximum coverage available for any one accident is $ 100,000 including Both BI and PD.
Property Damage Liability Pays when you are legally liable for damage to the
(Sometimes referred to as PD) property of others caused by your vehicle.
Medical Payments Pays medical, dental & hospital expenses for you,
(Each Person Limit) household relatives and guest passengers injured in a motor vehicle accident. Also protects you and household relatives in other vehicles or if struck as pedestrians.
Uninsured/Underinsured
Motorist Pays damages that you, household relatives and
(Sometimes referred to as UM passengers in your insured motor vehicle are legally
and UIM) entitled to recover because of bodily injury or death caused by uninsured, hit and run motor vehicles and underinsured (defendants with lower liability coverage than those damages suffered by you) motorists. Your choice of tort option has a direct affect in your ability to recover damages.
Full Tort Option The selection of the Full Tort Option form of Bodily Injury Liability, Uninsured/Underinsured Motorists coverage provides an unrestricted right to seek financial compensation for injuries caused by other drivers. Financial compensation is allowed for all medical and other out-of-pocket expenses, including compensation for pain and suffering and other non-monetary damages as a result of injuries caused by other drivers.
Limited Tort Option The selection of the Limited Tort Option allows for a reduction in premium costs in exchange for limitations on recovery rights. Recovery for all medical and other out-of-pocket expenses are allowed but pain and suffering or other nonmonetary damages are prohibited unless injuries fall within the definition of “serious injury”.
Stacking When you have more than one vehicle you have the option of “stacking” your UM/UIM limits of liability, increasing the limit by the number of vehicles in the household. For example, if you have a $ 35,000 UM/UIM limit with 3 vehicles stacked, your total limit of liability would be $ 105,000.
Comprehensive Pays for damage to Your vehicle caused by fire, theft,
vandalism, hail, windstorm, riot, falling objects, flood, deer, etc. The deductible applies to all damage. Comprehensive does not pay for collision or upset.
Collision or Upset Pays for loss or damage to Your vehicle caused by collision with another object or by upset of the vehicle. Payments are made on an actual cash value basis for the amount of each loss less your deductible.
Towing Labor Costs Pays up to the limit on your policy for each claim for towing your vehicle and any labor costs at the place of disablement. Does Not pay for parts or subsequent repair costs.
Rental Reimbursement Coverage is available on autos insured for collision and/or comprehensive perils. It reimburses you for a set amount per day and occurrence limit for the expense of renting a substitute vehicle when your auto is disabled by a covered loss. There is no coverage extended for the lost income to the rental car company while the vehicle is being repaired. The rental car company will charge you for that expense.
